Hydraulic systems are an essential component of modern-day machinery and equipment; and the proper functioning of these systems is critical to ensure optimal performance and safety. FSC’s focus on hydraulic system design and maintenance is a key component of our commitment to quality customer service. That commitment led the FSC team to realize the need for a customized test stand that allowed us to test and validate the performance of hydraulic manifolds. Out of that need, “Big Red” was born.
Big Red is a fully functional hydraulic manifold test stand, that incorporates LabVIEW engineering software and touchscreen controls. It is equipped with two 100hp motors that are coupled to 125cc axial piston pumps. These pumps can deliver a maximum flow rate of 50gpm (gallons per minute) and pressures up to 5000psi. This capability allows our team to simulate real-world conditions for service and testing.
The test stand also incorporates eight working ports on each side, a PQ (pressure flow) controller with eight proportional outputs, and multiple pressure and tank ports. These features allow for multiple manifolds to be tested simultaneously and for precise control of fluid flow rates and pressure, making Big Red the idea tool for testing and validating manifold performance. The bi-directional flow reading capabilities range from .33gpm to 50gpm, providing accurate readings of hydraulic fluid flow rates in both directions. These capabilities allow our techs to replicate the load that each manifold will demand in the field.
Contamination is a significant concern in hydraulic systems and is a main cause of system failures. Big Red was designed with an onboard contamination sensing system that detects and measures contamination levels and displays those issues for our service techs. Much like contamination issues, operating temperatures are always a concern. This test stand is equipped with an air/oil cooler to maintain optimal operating temperatures, which are specific to our customers specifications. This ensures the hydraulic fluid is at the correct temperature during testing, providing accurate and reliable performance results.
Controlling operating temperatures, identifying contaminants, and measuring overall performance are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the capabilities of FSC’s manifold testing stand.
